Every Hand Matters; Every Dollar Counts
Your community gathering place, located in the “heart” of Langley, needs help. SWC Board member, Jim Shelver, working with local volunteer architects, builders, and craftsman, discovered that our wonderful Island Coffeehouse & Books building had a fast sinking foundation. The Board knew the facility had structural problems when we purchased it, but their concerns have become critical and need to be addressed immediately.
With community help, both professional and volunteer, the foundation can be repaired and electrical, plumbing, and heating brought up to standard at an estimated cost of $100,000. Our Board is committed to “fixing the foundation,” improving the facility and becoming self-sustainable to support programs. We are close to meeting 50% of this goal, including 100% Board support. With plans and permits in hand, we will begin construction in mid February.
Why should you help? SW Commons is a vibrant community gathering place with a wide range of programs for children, youth, families and seniors. It is a true “commons” for local culture, community connections, and a catalyst for the local economy and community health. SW Commons is a self-sustaining non-profit, not funded by any government programs. With few grants available during the economic downturn, we are dependent on your community support.
What are some accomplishments? Since its inception in 1995, SW Commons has: created a dynamic organization with a youth-run business; provided employment training to 300 youth volunteers (25 have been hired on South Whidbey); started Playscape, a support program for birth to 5 children and their parents; implemented Family Lego Club, for youth and their parents; raised $22,000 for roof, exterior maintenance and landscaping.
We are clearly aware this is a difficult time to raise money, especially for capital needs, but we would appreciate your help. Please click here for a secure opportunity to donate online.
New Program: CafÉ EspaÑoL
THURSDAYS at 5:30 p.m. in the Backroom
Monthly Schedule:
Margaret Diehl, media chair for the SW Commons Youth Engagement Squad (YES) and a senior at South Whidbey High School, is partnering with Glenn Leever, Americorps member, to create a brand-new program at the SW Commons: Café Espanol, a Spanish club for all levels and ages.
"The idea is to encourage members of the community to practice conversational Spanish, share good food and worldly perspectives," Glenn said. "And also to bring together diverse members of the community to connect over a fun and common interest."
The group will meet every Thursday in the Backroom at South Whidbey Commons at 5:30pm, located at 113 Mcleod Alley, Langley. We invite you to join in the fun! It’s free, but feel free to bring a potluck dish to share.
