FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Starting February 1, the South Whidbey Commons’ Island Coffeehouse and Books will be closing for 8 weeks in order to renovate the building and bring it up to standard.
The kitchen floor is sinking and needs a new foundation, and the plan is to upgrade the electrical and plumbing in the process. The seating capacity will also be increased so the Coffeehouse can grow in its role as Langley’s community gathering space. The entire project will be volunteer-driven. Every hand matters, every dollar counts. For more information, contact SWC 360-221-0127.

ISLAND COFFEEHOUSE & BOOKS:
THE BASICS
Island Coffeehouse and Books, SWC's flagship program, is a non-profit youth-powered business and community "living room" where thousands of conversations have taken flight over tasty coffee drinks and crisp biscotti.
Island Coffee House and Books (ICB) is located on 2nd Street in the heart of beautiful downtown Langley on South Whidbey Island, just a minute's walk from the beach. Our shop is located in an old home with a large and welcoming front yard and side patio.
Inside you'll find a great selection of gently-used books
and a full service espresso bar complete with cookies
and other baked goods.

YOUTH TRAINING + CIVIC ENGAGEMENT = LIVING ROOM
At Island Coffeehouse and Books, youth who
volunteer as barista/booksellers undergo rigorous training that helps them acquire technical skills and business knowledge, as well as general skills (communication,
customer service, teamwork and reliability) that support success in education, employment and life.
Youth integrate civic engagement values as they serve their community from behind the counter and in other SWC activities, like assisting seniors with garden work or helping at the local Good Cheer Food Bank.
Youth volunteers have learned about the coffee business through trips to Seattle's world-renowned Coffeefest trade fair and have learned about the roasting process at Mukilteo Coffee, our Whidbey Island Roastery.
Each year, ICB trains and supports around 100 youth, with close to 60 active at any time. And ICB benefits the community while providing this needed workforce development/job training. Since March 2005, ICB has been a gathering place for thousands of community members, home to concerts, open mike nights, and discussion groups. ICB is also a place for young local artists to show, share and sell their work.
Island Coffeehouse and Books thrives because of a talented team of volunteers who care about the place and what it offers us all. While most barista/booksellers have been youth, we welcome community members of all ages and currently have volunteer baristas ranging in age from 12 to 50+.
The ICB Youth Barista Scholarship Program (click here) recognizes outstanding volunteers with an annual scholarship award.
